If you are thinking of letting your beards grow out phenomenally, then this post contains the most important things to remember. One important thing to note is Where to Shave When Growing Beards.
Truth be told, it’s not an easy thing for everyone who chooses to grow a beard. Some of the problems faced by grooming class are Patchy spots and stubborn beard growth.
To this end, I’ve created this article to tackle problems faced by men who want to let their beards grow out perfectly. In this article, I will show you how and where to shave when growing a Beard.
Why is it important to read this article? Well, some men experience patchy beards during facial hair growth while some men have the opposite problem: too much growth in the wrong places — also known as the “neckbeard.” It’s gross. Like seriously, this is a problem that does affect the vast majority of men out there.
Ask yourself this question: Does your beard hair extend further down your neck than the imaginary line that separates your neck and under your chin? If your sincere answer is yes, then you need to read on. That’s the easy way to tell.
At this point, you are now in dire need of a neckline trim. Luckily, this problem is easily rectified with the help of your preferred shaving implement and some knowledge. I will show you how to deal with neck trim like a pro in full details.
But before then, let me explain what we are about to run through.
Where To Shave When Growing Beards
- The first thing to do is to imagine a line that extends from the bottom of your ear down, following the imaginary crook between your jaw and your under-chin, and your neck. That line should be about an inch and a half above your Adam’s apple, but of course, it’s different for everyone based on your proportions.
- This will make it easy for you to shave off everything below the line, using shaving cream and going against the grain. Try to keep that line as neat as possible, as it is the new “edge” of your beard. (If you’re using an electric shaver, use the edging attachment. I understand that it is normal for the line to be an imperfect one unless you’re super particular. It is underneath your chin, after all, so you shouldn’t obsess about it too much. Should you?
- Now you will notice that around that line where your beard turns from being perpendicular to your ear to pointing towards your Adam’s apple, it starts to look a bit tricky. All you have to do is to either square the edge, which is a more masculine look or round it out. If you have a rounder face you might want to make the edge square, and if you have a squarer face, a rounder edge might give your face some more depth.
There you have it. You’ve gotten rid of your unwanted beard. Follow these steps and you’ll never have to worry about the dreaded neck beard again.
However, that is just a sneak peek of what I want to really show you here. Do Make sure you follow my simple shaving guide below, so the shaving doesn’t irritate your skin and cause you to break out underneath your neck.
How To Trim and Fade Beard Neckline
Since I’ve started writing and sharing experience on grooming kits and procedures for men, I’ve considered it to be a guide, buyer’s guide for grooming products, or simply advice.
But here, these are LAWS and MUST-DOs if you really want to have a perfect trim of your beard neckline.
Take these tips to heart (both how and where to clip the beard neckline)
1. Like I have highlighted earlier on, Envision a curved line between both ears (points A and B), connected by another point (C) above Adam’s apple.
2. To locate the proper midpoint (C), place two fingers above your Adam’s apple (roughly 1.5 inches).
Adjust the clipper’s two settings below your beard length. Clip everything below this imaginary line. As your beard grows, you can maintain this same setting on the clippers when trimming.
Even when you have a full, healthy beard, you’ll want the hair between your neckline and Adam’s apple to be relatively short.
How to Fade Beard Neckline
So if you are looking at fading your beard neckline instead of Trimming, that is no longer a difficult job with these two easy steps.
1. Go one or two settings shorter on the clippers. Target the same space just above Adam’s apple: Trim the bottom half with this shorter setting, but leave the top half at the length of the original setting. This will create a gradient instead of a hard stop along your neckline.
2. Finally, buzz all stray hairs between your chest hair and the bottom of the fade (i.e. your Adam’s apple).
Now that you’ve known how to get rid of unwanted facial hair while growing out a beard, we can not afford to just stop there. I have invested a significant amount of time to discover the common problems that bearded men face and I’ve been able to tackle some.
Let’s briefly run through some factors affecting proper beard growth
As you may have noticed, beards and facial hair is now fully in men’s fashion, and if you have felt a desire to grow a beard at some time or another, then you should be bothered about the best way to let a beard grow.
Now, we’re going to discuss how to grow thicker facial hair faster and how to fix a patchy beard.
#1. Your Beard is Not “Patchy” – It’s simply growing
“Mr. Emma, I believe that the best way to tackle patchy beards is to cut your growth short once you start noticing it” — A friend.
Well, whether you believe it or not, patchy beards are completely normal. And like I have said in the heading – Your beard isn’t patchy. It’s simply growing.
*The Patches Are Caused By Thickness, Not Length!*
There are a couple of attributes that cause some beards to look denser and others to look patchy.
If you have lighter hair, it will almost always appear thinner than someone with dark hair. Like the hair on your head, facial hair can be thick or thin, and thicker facial hair always appears fuller.
You should know that Beards take some time to grow in. If you’re not quick to grow a consistent beard, it’s best to start growing it just before going on vacation, when you can justify not shaving for a while. You may even decide to take a “beardcation” just to help grow out the beard without looking awkward at the office.
If you have holidays coming up, stop shaving a day or two beforehand; hopefully by the time you return to work, the beard will be distinguishable as a beard, and it won’t look like you were too lazy to shave.
#2. The First Month of Not Shaving
In the cases of most average men, it is after a full month of growth that their beards start to fully connect without any glaring patches whatsoever. Special cases may last longer than a month.
*Beard is a commitment, growing it out takes patience and some work*
After the first month has passed, you have two options. Either commit to growing a beard that might land you on Duck Dynasty or start grooming the beard to look more polished.
Grooming can be done from the start, but the risk of starting too early is that you won’t have the chance to see how your beard falls along its natural lines. This can be problematic for some men who misjudge how their beard will grow and then have to grow out of an area they have trimmed or shaved.
If after the first month, you still notice glaring patches or a lack of density in certain areas, you may need to give it a bit of extra help.
There is good news, however. If you have trouble growing a full beard easily, chances are you don’t have to worry about going bald. Research has shown that most men who easily grow beards from a young age are more prone to male pattern baldness than men who have difficulty growing a beard.
3. Beard Itchiness
It is true that your second half may dislike coarse hair, and it is strenuous when you have people to deal with who are commenting or staring because you look a little rough around the edges.
As soon as you start growing your beard, there are a couple of things you should consider doing to keep it healthy and radiant. I’ll show you these in full detail next.
But one thing you should keep in mind is to wash it regularly. Keep it hydrated, but don’t over-wash the beard. Just like your hair, it doesn’t need to be washed daily, or you run the risk of drying it out.
Immediately begin applying beard oil to keep it soft, prevent excessive itching and keep it healthy.
How to Help Your Beard Grow
So, how does one grow a beard that’s giving you a hard time? While it is advisable to Start trimming after about four weeks, here are a few tricks and tips to help your beard grow.
Do not Shave It
Yes, this is actually needless to say because you are actually ‘growing’ out. So Shaving a beard does not cause it to grow back thicker or faster. The only way to grow a majestic beard is by actually making the commitment to let it grow.
Reduce your Stress and Anxiety
The same way you can lose hair due to stress, it can also prevent you from growing your beard out. Stress has been shown to constrict blood vessels and some evidence even points to cortisol reducing testosterone levels.
Eat good food
Vitamin, protein and mineral-rich diets are a great way to grow thicker hair. A healthy and well-balanced diet is key to growing facial hair.
Do some Exercise regularly
Do you know that Testosterone and beard growth go hand in hand? , so head to the gym and break a sweat to see thicker beard growth. Exercising and losing weight increases testosterone and blood circulation which both have a huge effect on facial hair growth.
Short, but intense workouts will cause testosterone to increase faster and will also prevent it from declining.
Use the right grooming Tools
There’s more to say on this one. Because a proper Beard growth also depends on how well it is groomed. But I’ll recommend you read this article that will show you how to groom your beard like a pro HERE
Take a Break
We all know a big part of how fast our beard grows is caused by simple genetics, but unlike some aspects such as your height, your beard will keep growing. It may take a little bit of time, but if you make the commitment, you will be rewarded with a lush and majestic beard.
Sleep well
*One study in 2011 by the Journal of the American Medical Association said that if you sleep for 5 hours or less, your testosterone levels will decrease by as much as 15 percent. In other words, go to bed!*
In order to remain healthy, we require sleep. The old saying “maybe you’ll feel better in the morning” is like saying “maybe if you turn it off and back on again, it will work.”
Taking Some Vitamins will help also
There are even some out there that are designed specifically for beard growth, but since supplements are a highly unregulated industry, be prepared that they might not work.
This is part of eating well. Taking supplements like iron; vitamin B, D, and E; magnesium; zinc and copper can all increase hair thickness. Check with your doctor before taking any over the counter supplements.
How To Fix A Patchy Beard
If you find that your hair does grow unevenly, there are a few ways that you can improve this, or even hide it completely.
A patchy beard is nothing to be ashamed of and should not cause you any stress. Follow these tips and make it something of the past.
Choose a Beard Style
Choosing the right beard style to suit your face shape is important, but selecting the right beard for your hair type is paramount.
If you’re not sure what type of beard is best for you, you can always seek out the help of your barber. From a classic to a Viking beard, there are so many choices when it comes to your whiskers.
If you have the wrong style, it could accentuate your patches, whereas the right kind of beard will hide them altogether, or incorporate them into the style.
Keep it Trimmed
You can minimize the appearance of the patchy beard by trimming your facial hair. Depending on the position of these patches, you can trim your beard creatively. Take your time to ensure that you give yourself a neat and even trim, and check as you go.
Otherwise, you may end up with a more patchy beard than before. Incorporate these patches into your look using flattering angles. Start off using a number three, and then go shorter if you like from there.
Condition Your Beard
A good beard oil or beard balm will keep your mane healthy and clean all the way down to the follicles. This promotes blood flow, and in turn hair growth, resulting in a fuller, thicker and healthier beard.
Use an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and prevent dry skin. This will also help if you suffer from itchy beard syndrome while stimulating the skin underneath.
Wiry, dry and poorly looked after facial hair can cause a patchy beard. So, looking after it using the right products and tools can make a big difference to not just the health of the hair, but its overall appearance.
Grow it Long
Even if you plan to keep your beard shorter, letting your beard grow freely for a month can be a great way to identify which way the hair grows and where the patches are forming.
In turn, fuller more grown facial hair will help to cover any patches. Resisting the urge to trim or shave might be hard, but back away from the trimmer.
Instead of a short beard, you may want to try fuller longer facial hair. Yes, there will be a few awkward weeks where your facial hair is patchy while it grows out. But the hair should eventually grow evenly, covering the patches.
Manage Uneven Growth
As long as you manage the length of your facial hair so that it is as even as possible, the patches should be less noticeable. You should also condition your facial hair and take good care of it.
A well-loved beard is a well-managed beard
Keeping your beard trimmed to an even and short length is one way to minimize the appearance of patches. Or keeping it full enough to cover the patches. All of our tips should help your facial hair to grow more evenly.
Disguise Blank Patches
This is a simple and effective way to hide patches which are otherwise unfixable. Don’t be afraid to break out the eyebrow pencil to shade in smaller patches.
In order to make it look more natural, make sure you choose a brow pencil that matches your beard colour.
Women have been doing this for years to get their brows #onfleek so why shouldn’t the lads borrow a trick or two?
Seek the help of your partner, sister or female best friend or head to the makeup counter and ask the shop assistant, if you are unsure.
Use the right beard growth product!
Here is one of the most important things to consider during beard growth. There are many products that claim to promote hair growth on the top of your head. However, you should steer clear of these when it comes to your patchy beard.
Some chemicals found in hair products are far too harsh to come in contact with your skin. Particularly, a compound called Minoxidil. So by using these products on your beard, you are exposing the underlying skin to damage. This can cause dryness and other irritations which can cause your hair to fall out, making the patches worse.

Best beard styles to wear when growing beard
Even as a young guy grows gradually into a full man, the way he takes care of his grooming will increase. When growing a beard, there are some cool styles to wear that will help the beard grow healthier. With just a trimmer and some other necessary tools, you can make the best beard style that suits you.
When you are growing a beard is a time when most people will experience the blooming period of beard growth. This is why you should understand where and where to shave during these times.
In the line of taking care of your facial hair, I will show you some cool beard styles that you can wear when growing Beards.
More Around The Jawline And Less On The Chin
When you focus on letting the beard appear more on the jawline than the chin, then you are cutting this particular style. It is a very good style recommended for people growing a beard. Because you will not need to be frustrated at the slow growth of moustache. There will be no trace of moustache in this style and it is the best for those periods of nurturing a sprouting beard.
This means that the checks and upper lip area will look lighter but the jawline will look lighter because of the beards around there.
Regular Stubble Look With Beard Around The Cheeks
You can allow the beard to grow around the cheeks. It looks really great and the best way to style your beard when growing it. Most beards look like they stay around the jawline. But this time, beards will extend towards the cheeks.
This style is a good one not only because it is easier to maintain and keep but because it allows an equal progression of beard growth generally. Look trendy by wearing this style but do not trim until you allow the facial hair to grow out really thick.
Natural Growth Beard
This may sound very simple because all you are doing to wear this style perfectly is to allow your beard to naturally grow. In other words, your beard will grow unevenly and really sparsely. I bet you are thinking about how stylish this may look.
Yes, at the initial stage. But it actually gives that young and fresh look. But make sure you trim flyaways and prevent it from looking rough.
Thicker Beard Around The Sides Of Chin
In contrast with Light Beard With No moustache, you will focus on growing the moustache and keeping it finely trimmed to a neat growth that is stubble.
In this style, we are working mainly with the facial hairs situated at the edges of the chin from the lower part of the lip. The hairs around the entire beard area will be much lower than that in the edges of the chin.
Rugged Beard
A very good amount of facial hair is required for this king of style. Rugged beard does not mean it will be entirely rugged. In other words, this style will work for people in the later years of growing a beard because a very good amount of facial hair will not appear when you just start the first stage of beard growth.
After waiting to naturally grow out the proper beard along the chin and jawline, trim the top of the beard to maintain a little gap in between. If there is hairs around the lips, make sure they remain very thin or you can even choose to shave it off completely.
Very Sparsely Spread Stubble
Let’s talk more about stubbles. This style is particularly for men who have noticed some extent of facial hair growth when growing them. It will not require much maintenance skill because all you will be doing to maintain this style on your face is trimming the beard and an equal moustache regularly.
Do not allow this look unkempt. But the beard should look stubble all over the chin, jaw, as well as cheek area.
Beard With Small Goatee
To wear the look in the very best way, centre your attention around the Goatee and the beard. First of all, allow the beats to grow normally, but you will begin to touch it in the chin area. And needless to say, you will need to keep some amount of hairs on the upper lip area to create a small Goatee.
Allow the moustache to grow naturally then trim into a Goatee. The key is that it shouldn’t look shabby in the process.
Light Beard With No mustache
When growing Beards, It is not necessarily important to be obsessed with the way your moustache grows. When wearing this look, you are mainly focusing on the beard. This style will particularly fit those who have much more hairs on their jawline and chin area than they have around the lips area.
Carving the Light Beard With No moustache style is having thicker bears around the chin, and the hairs on the cheek and jawline remain sparse.
These eight beard styles that I have just shared with you are really great ones to wear when growing a beard. Healthy beard growth does not only rely on the oils and cream you use on them but how you style them. It is important to take note of all these and know the ones that will look perfect on your face. It has to do with the shape on your face and how it will suit you.
If you have difficulty doing these styles by yourself at home, you can head to any barbershop to help you out. But the major thing is to try not to lose too much hair when growing your beard and wearing any style. Because the overall goal is to grow a very magnificent and healthy beard while maintaining it until that stage.
